Production Design, Architects Of The Screen by Jane Barnwell

The Chapter of this book that has been most useful to me is chapter 3, 'From Concept to Construct' because I am someone new to this form of Art, having only really come into this specialism properly last semester. I found it really interesting to read how someone progresses from their initial ideas.

It opens with this quote from Stuart Craig, "Immediately you have some images. You move on from there so dramatically because you start to research, you start to look at things, you start to visit real places so you do have to educate yourself very rapidly at the beginning and go at it with an open mind." 

The main points that have stuck in my head whilst reading through this section of the book are:

• Create wildly- spend wisely
• Try to diversify from what you perceive to be the norm
• Relationship with the director is key
• Without concept, there is no overall design
• Delve into characters and what you think they surround themselves with
• Polarisation in films is a good way to detail different character personalities
• Sketches are important to detail direction of light- direct or diffused?
• Location- think if a location is appropriate in terms of size, situation and decoration.

This whole chapter really has been invaluable to me as it goes through the different aspects from initial ideas through to realisation. I just need to apply these ideas and way of working into my own work.
